I discover new beauty products by researching individual ingredients to see if there's solid scientific evidence of their safety and effectiveness, then I search for products that feature those ingredients. I'm a bit of an armchair scientist, so I like to sift through what's real and what's just a gimmick. Products I use have to be absolutely animal and earth friendly.

My beauty inspiration has always been great music. Whether it's the melody itself, the album art or the artists' fashion, music is aesthetics. From the first dandy of jazz, Lee Morgan, to June Bolan, who created glamrock by swiping glitter on her husband Marc's face, from modern artists like the singer of UVERworld, who slips a unique touch of his own into every outfit, to the walking fashion/art exhibit that is the ladies of Perfume, music is about communicating beauty to the world - - both audibly and visibly. A song can make me feel like wearing a certain scent or a particular shade of lipstick. An album cover can inspire the decor of a whole room, and an artist's uncompromising sense of fashion can rouse confidence in me if I try to channel them on a difficult day. Also, in music as in beauty, things like gender and age are always irrelevant. Natural, subtle and over-the-top are equally magnificent. That "free to be whatever" attitude follows what my mom taught me, too: anyone should be able to be any and all styles, whenever they please. I think that's so true, because we are multifaceted beings. I can be a tomboy, a girly girl, a punk, a hippy, a mod or a rocker - - all in the same week and at any age. I wish everyone understood that we are at our most beautiful when we're being absolutely true to whatever we want to say on any given day.
